External communication is all the ways in which an organization communicates with its publics: the community, local authorities, funding bodies, governments, clients, potential clients, partners, potential employees, investors, shareholders, the media, and suppliers.
Strategic planning can help you be effective in your communications to any of these audiences. The process can be simplified to the series of steps shown to the left, but how well the steps are executed will also determine your success. Are you communicating the right information to the right audiences at the right time? Are you using the media that your audience prefers?
In addition, measurement and evaluation, often the forgotten step, is extremely valuable to help you understand your return on investment.
